Sakusuke Kato (Shinya, deceased), a fifth-generation artist, was designated a Living Human Treasure of Aichi Prefecture in 2004. He has been repeatedly selected to participate in the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and has dedicated himself to nurturing a new generation of artists while teaching at the Aichi Prefectural University of Arts.

Living National Treasures (Ningen Kokuho) in Japan are artisans recognized by the state as possessors of unique skills and guardians of intangible cultural assets, including traditional crafts, theater (Kabuki, Noh), and performing arts. The title has been awarded since the 1950s to preserve cultural heritage.

The essence of the status: The Ningen Kokuho (Living National Treasure) title is awarded to individuals who have achieved the highest levels of mastery in their field.

 

About and characteristics of Sakusuke Kato.
Traditions and History: Located in Seto City, the Sakusuke family has been in the business since the Edo period and is a renowned workshop for traditional Oribe and Kiseto pottery.
Style: In addition to Oribe ware, distinguished by its green glaze, it has a unique worldview that includes the "zogan" technique, which applies various types of clay to the surface of the vessel, and "kiseto" ware, which depicts flowers and plants.
Achievements: This talented family has inherited traditional techniques and has won numerous awards at exhibitions such as the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.

Bio.

Born in Seto City in 1940 (childhood name Shinya).
1966 Graduated from the Graduate School of Ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts, studying under Hachimoe Kato, Yoshimichi Fujimoto, and Koichi Tamura.
1968 Began creating ceramics in Seto.
1969 First selected for the 17th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Submitted works every year thereafter.
1972 Held his first solo exhibition at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. Since then, the event has been held every other year.
1987: Appointed director of the Japan Kogei Council and secretary-general of its Tokai branch.
1992: Professor of Ceramics at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts.
1996: Succeeded as Sakusuke V upon the passing of his father.
1998: Certified holder of the Intangible Cultural Property "Kiseto and Oribe Ceramics" by Seto City (Aichi Prefecture, 2004).
2013: Received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette.
